The Ultimate Kick
I invented a specialized kick drum microphone that uses physical modeling to provide a fool-proof great kick sound every time, without the hassles and wasted time that often accompany traditional mic'ing. The kick output is broadband, letting you easily sculpt the tone to match pretty much any popular kick sound. I believe the potential market for this product is huge, but I'm too old to start another audio business. I'm hoping to find an existing company that will license this microphone from me. I have a patent pending, so I'm glad to share the details in the video below. If any of my UA-cam friends know a company that might be interested in licensing this product, please let me know. Thanks!

How important Is shielding with RCA wires?

Rather than measure wires directly, th...

Would anyone know what song that string section is in? I’d love to hear what it sounds like
What string section, where?
@@EthanWiner thank you so much for replying. The string section that was on the magazine you mentioned, with the difusors behind the players. I wonder what it sounds like, but it seems like a good ideia for me from the beginning
That photo is from a cover of Mix Magazine showing a recording session at Skywalker Sound. I believe the group is the Kronos String Quartet.
@@EthanWiner thank you so much! I really appreciate your time too
"If it measures good and sounds bad, -- it is bad. If it sounds good and measures bad, -- you've measured the wrong thing." - Daniel R. von Recklinghausen, HH Scott
Yes, but if it measures good but sounds bad, again you measured the wrong things. Comprehensive measurements are difficult to do, and extremely rare in sales brochures and advertisements. Much more here: ua-cam.com/video/Zvireu2SGZM/v-deo.html
@@EthanWiner I sold hi end in the 70's and 80's. I always found the quote both true, amusing and still relevant today.
Thanks for the video. Would there a a better audio result if you put some kind of fabric on it? What about the material of the diffusor, how much does it affect the sound? Thanks
If you have technical questions about this video that require a reply, please do not post them here as comments. UA-cam is not a good venue for a technical exchange. Instead, please post your questions in the Acoustics section of my Audio Expert forum: the-audio-expert.freeforums.net/
You'll never know how good or bad your speakers really are until you fix your room.
True!

Thanks for this video Ethan
Fantastic video. I'm about to move and my new living room will be quite similar, I'm installing a range of sound treatments with, corner bass traps, and a couple of absorption panels per wall. I've invested in the room treatments and I'm using fairly modest speakers that i've had for 23 years and a SVS Subwoofer. As the room is small i've focused on broadband absorption but I might liven it up with some strategic diffusion if it ends up a too dead for my liking.
WRT polys, for the exact reason you stated, you should not have designed them to butt up against each other to avoid detrimental acoustic effects.
Ethan NO, avoiding all early reflections is not the answer. We need the front and corner secondaries for depth and spaciousness and power response. Like most, you comment only about frequency response and little about the spatial response - you mention imaging across the whole width of the room and deeper than the speakers themselves but you don't explain why that happens, what causes that. It is the early reflected from front and front corners.
You are just wrong. These two articles explain why you are wrong in great detail: ethanwiner.com/early_reflections.htm www.audioxpress.com/article/why-doesn-t-my-stereo-sound-like-a-live-concert
We, as humans, nearly always hear what we want to hear. I learned this in almost 20 years of sales & automotive service. I'm certainly not innocent of it myself. Perception is reality.
Bravo

What a loathsome deceiver McGowan is! Highly skilled showman maybe, but loathsome nonetheless. Not for one second do I believe he actually believes in what he is saying.
Tchaikovsky Telecaster Overdrive!
Your opening assertions at 1.18 are presented as statements of fact when in reality they are just your opinion. For example wire CAN add noise if it isn't effectively shielded and is placed in an electrically noisy environment. That noise may or may not be in the audio range but even if it s the RF range then it can be added to the signal and may (or may not) affect the audio equipment that it is connected to.
Wire itself can't add noise other than Johnson noise that exists everywhere, though you are correct that *outside* noise can impinge on a wire and get into audio devices that way. But you also need to see this video: ua-cam.com/video/0QTjc6SBrmg/v-deo.html
Sales guys like Paul the shill, wants to keep it a mystery, so he can keep selling his improvements to the gullible. Does he still sell the noise "harvester" plug magic blinking LED? What a conman...TIMBER
genius Sir!
Thanks!
I tried a bunch of times to reply to you on the other cello video, but UA-cam kept deleting my posts. Go to my Audio Expert forum to ask questions. The link is on my web site.
That was a blast. Thanks!
Thanks!
Very handy device.
would it be essential to use this in a vocal booth?
No, a vocal booth should be totally dead with absorption. Even better is the RealTraps Portable Vocal Booth (PVB). It avoids the boxy sound you get from small enclosed spaces.
@@EthanWiner how much they usually run for, the reason I ask is because my control room Is where I record because I can’t afford to create a booth room so I record in the same room, I have like 8 thick absorbers and 6 panel with scatter plate in them so the room wouldn’t be so dead… I figure if I take the scatter plate out and put just 2 or 4 diffuser and maybe buy pvb would that be a good option to do? Cause even though I get a good decent recording that 200 600- range I really have to Eq
@@EthanWiner I still have to mix in the room as well
If you bought commercial traps and scatter plates from a company, you should ask them for advice. But the general goal is to have a room that's neutral, on the dead side.
It’s the hi-fi, audiofool crowd… headphone cable is another one..
So should I be using combo reflection and absorbtions panels that you mention for the first reflection points, or just go with pure rockwool or fiberglass?
Reflection points are best treated with pure absorption.
City!
Eat your heart out Mike Oldfield ! Absolutely love this thank you
Thanks Vincent!
Thats far below your own standard, isn't it? No hum , but maybe wifi or other noise is poisoning the signal. And if you talk about hometheater , with Marantz amplifiers or cheap players as source , you should not take the word HiFi or Highend into the mouth, because it isn't.
I didn't approve your other comments because they're filled with ignorance and, frankly, I don't have the time to refute all the nonsense you claimed. GR research, LOL! You can read my other replies in this video's comments to see where you went wrong. But I will tell you this: My Null Tester device and video proves the point very well, and it uses music as a test signal rather than steady tones. Watch and learn: ua-cam.com/video/ZyWt3kANA3Q/v-deo.html
@@EthanWiner 😃 No word about any argument I brought , then that they are wrong. My kind of humour . NOT. You are arguing against GR without looking at their video, otherwise you would hide away you null-tester immediately. Null Tester is the correct name , it tests 0. And you will again hide away my comment. Because arguments re not your weapon.
Believe me, I have seen many of Danny's videos, and he's at least as clueless as you are. Again, if you want to see my rebuttals to your ignorance, I have already answered too many times in the Paul McGowan and Null Tester video comments. I don't have the energy to keep typing the same things again and again. But I can tell you this: You clearly don't understand what the Null Tester does and how it works. Maybe try watching again with an open and more analytical mind.
It's people like you who put people off of the hobby.

From the golden age of UA-cam
When listening, I prefer not to put up with the faint background signal noise (noise floor) One should try pressing pause or mute, and from the MLP, if one is unable to differentiate whether the systems on or off that's telling you, your cables are crap. When friends or guests come around rather than showing them how loud the system goes, I prefer to press pause/mute and show them how quiet it goes. None of them gets it, of course 😂 After auditioning three separate AVR's, the same ambient sound of the room was still present! It was only on the third occasion when I finally purchased shielded cables that the noise floor in my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to disappear/dissipate. Even though I'm now using a high-performance arcam avr20 with matching power amps, at the time, as well as my original budget Sony SDR dn1080 AVR most of my testing came from when I was auditioning mid-price Japanese AVR's Never mind the cost, do you really think I would go through all this work not once, not twice, but on the third time to get it right... If interested, here's a 3-minute video of what I went through. Please bear in mind that I'm no videographer 😂 ua-cam.com/video/wwU0d3NfRQw/v-deo.htmlsi=8RcX4g8b07jjmYEr
RCA wires don't usually matter. Maybe you live near a strong radio transmitter?
This is criminally under-watched. Proof of how many talented musicians there are out there not getting the recognition they deserve. But many thanks for this, Ethan, it's fucking awesome. Love from Sweden.

Great video. Several days ago, I questioned the superiority of 24/192 audio over 16/44 on the AVS Forum. The amount of vitriol directed at me was remarkable. Rather than addressing the technical difference, one poster took me to task for upsetting people.
Tell me about it! I get the same. They know they can't refute the facts of audio, so all that's left is to complain about something else.
This is gold. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Just WoW! your amazing! you gave alot of knowledge in a honnest, straight forward, concise, efficient, short and sweet. you rock!!! in a constructive criticisim comment i would say: put a joke like the acoustic book one at every 3min of your videos and why the poly-diffusors are not in the loop at the end? but again, amazing viedos ;-)
